Abstract Responsible urban space and sustainable social relation should be facilitated with regeneration of urban space. Early modern industrial buildings in Shanghai, constructed with foreign capital and high technology during concession period, have important values of regeneration. Creative industry complex in Shanghai has attracted with high-end modern service enterprises, functioning as a platform for communication and development of the creative industry with regenerated industrial buildings. Purpose of this study is to analyze the socio-geographical relation of 159 modern industrial buildings and 116 creative industrial complexes, which are distributed in Shanghai urban area. Functions of early modern industrial buildings and creative industry complexes are analyzed by 5 districts including modern industrial area, Suzhou riverside area and other specific urban areas.
