Abstract Research on human behaviour during an evacuation is conducive to the safety and effective evacuation of future space users. Considering this, the present study carried out an in-depth analysis of previous studies on evacuation behaviour published in domestic journals to derive research trends and characteristics. Below are the findings of this study. First, as for research trends in journals, a total of 14 journals from academic societies and research institutes cover research articles on evacuation behaviour. Not much research on evacuation behaviour was published prior to 2000. By contrast, due to the 'subway fire at Jungangro Station in Junggu Daegu' that occurred in 2003 and relevant law enforcement, research on evacuation behaviour has increased sharply since 2005. Second, regarding objectives of studies, 12 out of 49 articles aimed at establishing reference data applicable to development of evacuation plans and simulations, accounting for the highest percentage (24.5%). In view of spatial settings studied, 9 articles (9.11%) focused on high-rise residential apartment housings and skyscrapers. Third, in terms of study methods, 17 articles (34.7%) reported on experiments using subjects with actual evacuation conditions reproduced. As to the study methods over time, experimental studies with subjects have rapidly increased in recent years. Fourth, concerning the types of experimental studies, 18 out of 37 articles (48.6%) set virtual evacuation scenarios, while 12 articles (32.4%) conducted experiments on flows only without scenarios. Finally, study items included such status-related items as overviews of buildings studied, use, occupant characteristics and identification/measurement/numbers/placement of evacuation traffic lines as well as operating/management-related items, whereas questionnaire survey items included awareness, evacuation behaviour, factors, education on fire prevention, evacuation psychology, frequency of use, evacuation methods, evacuation time and evacuation paths.
