Abstract This study is to discuss about the temporary housing space in the subway at a time of war through the awareness survey on users. A prototype was manufactured and a survey was conducted with users of the subway stations. Total 100 responses were collected and analyzed in the survey. This study will come to the following conclusions. First, a level of awareness on the evacuation to the subway stations at a normal time was high to some extent although the lack of systematic evacuation manual was found at an emergency time. Therefore, education and campaign for this shall be conducted. Second, the need of space to secure the physiological needs was high while the need of community space was low. In addition, privacy protection and psychological stability were found as some of the most important elements for the space planning. Therefore, it is desirable to plan the space with flexibility and as customized manner according to the size of the space. Third, future research on construction materials and methods is required to provide a residential space quickly.
