Abstract The present study investigates current status of BIM application, primary tasks utilizing BIM and relevant problems in domestic construction industry to analyze relative importance of problems associated with BIM application in domestic architectural design practices and make suggestions for betterment. Ultimately, this study aims to present practical reference data conducive to a stable and broad adoption of BIM among domestic architectural design offices in near future. The findings are as follows. First, a majority of domestic architectural design offices employ BIM at the request of clients and acknowledge the need for BIM whilst their satisfaction with BIM application is below par overall. Second, problems related to applying BIM in domestic architectural design offices largely involve economic feasibility and specialized manpower. Finally, this study proposes some measures to vitalize BIM application in domestic architectural design offices from the perspective of economic feasibility, specialized manpower, applicability, collaborative system and software based on a general consensus among experts.
