Abstract The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of space planning based on the types of childcare center(public, private, workplace and home) and then suggests some basic information to improve the space panning of childcare center. Data were collected through the field survey including a questionnaire, observations and interviews. The sample consisted of 25 childcare center in Ulsan. The results of this study were as follows; First, the workplace childcare center had more space than the others in floor area and classroom ares per child. Second, space composition ratio on average for care, staff, and service area was programmed by 64.69%, 11.95%, 23.32% respectively. Especially, patterns of using staff space, usually was composed of entrance, teacher's room, director's room, office, learning resources room and so on, mixed, should be provide to space for independence. Third, to set the quota on accommodated children, most centers provided the floor area of exclusive use space as the standard area in the present situation, but, classroom area per child should be considered to be a requirement to improve the quality level of childcare
