Abstract Many most popularly visited places of Seoul today, like Myoung-dong and Insa-dong currently have high night-time crime rate and depopulation problems. These places once were residential area originally. With the intention to promote the revitalisation, the planning authorities have been designating the average residential area attracting many visitors as Commercial Zone where the residential use is normally not permitted. There are many residential areas in Seoul, such as Hongdae-ap, Itaewon, Buk-chon, Seo-chon arising as the latest popular destination for visitors. These places show the similar symptoms of gradual depopulation and increasing night-time crime rate as the old ones did. The aim of this study is to find out the conditions affecting the revitalized streets within urban neighbourhood of Seoul and the feasible range of application for urban sustainability.
