Abstract In the seismic design, the design spectrum considering the responses of the acceleration, velocity, displacement and energy for the natural vibration period of structure is used. The acceleration response spectrum is the most frequently applied for the seismic design of structure in worldwide. In the case of using peak ground acceleration, the response characteristics of structure are reflected by using the acceleration response value because there is large uncertainties of the ground acceleration itself and it is difficult to consider the response characteristics of structure. The acceleration response spectrum is based on the linear elastic analysis on the single-degree of freedom system, however, practical structures are composed of the multi-degree of freedom system and allow for the plastic deformation, so that it makes a large difference between the both. In this study, the spectra such as the acceleration response and the energy equivalent velocity response are analyzed according to the structural behavior, the distribution of the force, stiffness and mass on each story of structure and the hysteresis characteristics. And the stability of the spectra is verified, so the propriety for the design spectrum is evaluated. Thus, the effective information is sorted for improving the accuracy of the seismic design.
