Abstract As environmental problems became global in scale in the late 20th century, sustainability has emerged as a critical issue in many different disciplines and fields. Especially it has become one of the most crucial concepts in the architecture industry which has a great impact on society, economy and culture. Only a few studies have addressed the problem that the aesthetic consideration seems to have been excluded in sustainable design development with only economic and environment aspects stressed on. In this paper, 'sustaining beauty' will be looked at as a practical alternative to embody sustainability. The purpose of this research is three?fold. First, based on the principles of 'Sustaining beauty', analytic framework for 'Sustaining beauty' is proposed. Secondly, our government's aesthetic attitude toward sustainable design development and prize-winning entries of River front city vision competition were examined through the framework. Finally, constructive design elements are drawn from the competition that would make a sustainable experience for users.
