Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to estimate the influence area of a new road and an application for automating the methodology. Most of existing studies on the influence area of roads are focused on conducting analysis at the metropolitan level, thereby making it difficult to effectively help urban planning and design at the local level. As such, this paper proposed a methodology of (i) employing a network analysis technique and (ii) identifying the influence area of new roads based on their actual use frequency. Furthermore, it developed a methodology of automatically extracting information on urban spatial structures from maps using new addresses (Map of Saejuso) that helps infer the actual use of new roads. The application of the proposed methodology shows that it is possible to estimate the influence area of a new road and also produce the findings as follows; the influence area 1) does not form a circular form, 2) and does not a simple closed curve. In this study, the methodology and application are applied to a real city to prove their validity and effectiveness.
