Abstract This study was intended to investigate improving methods of the residential environment of public rental housing by focusing on the social mix as a planning method of the public rental housing in response for diversified lifestyle of residents due to low birthrate and aging phenomenon This study selected public rental housing, Hirara Complex, in Okinawa that applied architectural planning of physical mixture of various scale unit housings to induce social mix in coexistence of various age and coexistence of various family type aspects First, as a result of classifying and analyzing the architectural planning method into housing, block, and complex level, it was identified that diversity and proper community formation of early tenants are acquiring great importance Also, it was verified that residents are being well-balanced in the early part of moving in according to the original plan through analysis on the time-based residential condition On the other hand, in 2013 after 11 years since the reconstruction, unbalanced situation of the balance of residents becoming standardized without durability occurred that the durability of social mix cannot be secured only through architectural planning methods of physical mixture of various housing scales Therefore, this study suggested provision methods as recognizing diversity of residence selection of residents, planning methods based on the response to area with flexibility, and supporting circulation between residents
