Abstract For the elderly and the disabled, barrier free environments and housing are important for their well-being and independent living Especially for social housing, people occupy their houses for a certain period of times and it is hard to change or modify their housing structure Therefore, it is important to provide accessible entrance and barrier free environments in social housing at the beginning of planing stage The purpose of this study is to investigate whether clear width and floor space is provided in social housing, and to explore space dimensions required for barrier-free for people with a variety of disabilities Due to the rising of elderly population, more seniors are likely to confront risks and inaccessibilities in their housing when they have to use wheelchairs or other assistive devices People with vision impaired also has risks in a confined entrance Therefore, accessible and clear space should be provided in a main entrance This study suggests space dimension of entrance, layout of entrance and bathroom and storage specifications for people with diverse needs according to their disabilities and contexts
