Abstract This study, based on the Fengshui theory, explains the location and natural environment of Suwon Hwaseong in Joseon dynasty as reflected in mountain range and watershed. Feng-shui theory had been acted longtime as the location selection guide for traditional settlements and dwelling in East Asia. In the location of pre-modern city, Mountain range Yongmaek should be connected long. The way out of Water stream Sugu should be closed topography. But, Mountain range is not connected in Hwaseong, and the way out of Water stream is opened to outside. This is an important location and natural environment characteristic as 18th century"s new city of Hwaseong.
