Abstract Despite the efforts of Korean government to vitalize BIM in AEC industry, the domestic adoption of BIM is still in its initial step. Particular in design field, where small and medium firms are the majority, shows lower level of BIM adoption. The primary reason for this could be considered as lack of the necessity of BIM caused by uncertain benefit of BIM and high technology entry barrier. Therefore, it is time to develop clear, quantifiable and qualitative measurement system for BIM performance to vitalize BIM utilization in design field. The purpose of this study is to suggest the BIM Performance Measurement System (PMS) for architectural design firms. This could improve the adoption of BIM in design field through offering the objective evidence of BIM benefit. To achieve this, authors have developed BIM Balanced Score Chart (BSC) which consist of Critical Sucess Factors (CSF) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI), and have validated its appropriateness by questionnaire survey, statistical analysis and case application. This development could contribute to voluntary utilization of BIM by visualizing detailed benefit of BIM. It also could improve the competitiveness of design firm by facilitating management of design process and estimating future outcome.
