Abstract The purpose of this paper is to describe the unique characteristics of architectural education, and compare these characteristics with the general theories of education, pedagogy and educational technology. And looking for the directions of improvement on architectural education at the present circumstances of complexity and uncertainty. The scope and procedures of the study is as follows; (1) To identify and extract the research areas and relevant items that is related to characteristics and instructional methods of architectural education through a literature search linked to western philosophy of education and pedagogy. (2) To extract the unique characteristics of architectural education and pedagogical features through the case study of 6 architectural schools that is different each others from the viewpoint of instructional method. (3) To find a relationship between the unique characteristics of architectural design education and the teaching-learning theories in general. The results of the study could be used as a basic data for improving the architectural education.
