Abstract |
This study performs the analysis on the ‘Marine City’ projects of japanese Metabolist Kiyonori Kikutake. With the criticism on their unreality, his projects have been often treated like sci-fi comics. However, Kikutake’s ‘Marine City’ projects have been not the result of simple fantasy, but the radical and systematic challenge for the future city based on socio-cultural realities of the postwar japanese society such as urban reconstruction, rapid economic growth and the traditional debate. Therefore, this paper reestablish the relations which Kikutake’s utopian projects had with the socio-cultural context of the time through the analysis on their history of formation, background, object of analogy, characteristics, etc. and again analyses them in terms of the urban cultural crisis of the japanese society. Kikutake’s ‘Marine City’ projects proposes the direction of the future city and architecture through the exhaustive analysis and criticism on the modern architecture and human civilization. |
