Abstract |
This study draws and systemizes the measuring elements, which would quantitatively explain the neighborhood play environment’s impacts on children’s play. The study was conducted as the following processes. First, it collects all the reviewed elements of neighborhood play environments in the existing studies of domestic and foreign researches. Second, it redefines and systemizes the drawn elements as measuring elements, whose nature would be explained in relation to the children’s play activity. Third, it checks the suitability of the measuring elements, based on the conditions of residential neighborhoods in Korea. The measuring elements of neighborhood play environments are systemized as social and physical environments by their natures, and also as places, streets, and regions by their spatial scopes. As the existing studies do not provide proper methods of quantitatively measuring the relationships between play environment and play activity in residential neighborhoods, this study contributes to re-examine as well as to systemize the scopes and the natures of play environments and activities, which expand to the realms of both physical and social elements. This study also contributes to suggest the practical measuring elements and their systems, reflecting the current conditions of residential areas in Korea. Utilizing this study’s measuring elements and systems, the up-coming study is to investigate neighborhood play environments’ impacts on children’s play activities. |
