Abstract This paper tried to identify postmodern characteristics of follies by comparing major garden follies of the premodern period with the folies of the Parc de la Villette. First, the layout motive of the premodern gardens was based on iconographical allegories in contrast to la Villette on the disjunction of the folies. Second, each layout borrowed its model from the artistical collage of collision or the cinematic montage of collision. Third, as a layout method, the former employed the narrative sequence using prosopopeia while the latter employed the narrative sequence for the cinematic promenade. Fourth, the decoration of the premodern follies tended to symbolize the genius loci, while a series of la Villette folies revealed the de-constructive performance of the cube. In conclusion, these characteristics have in common the postmodern hybridization, potential in the representation of the contemporarily diversified culture.
