Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the alkali-silica reaction through the addition of reactive aggregate in the alkali-activated geopolymer mortar. This study also carried out to analyse the behavior of these alkaline materials in the presence of reactive aggregate. The test method included mortar-bar method to measure the rate of expansion of the mortar bar specimens and morphological analysis and determining composition of the alkali-silica reaction products by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX). As a result, it was shown that the rate of expansion of the alkali-activated geopolymer mortars changed. At day 14, geopolymer mortar appeared to be safe with less than 0.1%. After the accelerated test, SEM analysis showed the presence of alkali-silica gel and rim around the aggregate and cement paste, According to the EDX, the reaction products decreased markedly as alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag was used. In addition, the study on improving the quality of alkali-activated mortar bar by substituting other materials of mineral admixture is needed to assure of the durability properties of concrete.
