Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the kitchen discourse on the articles of Donga Ilbo from 1920s to 1930s. The semantic network analysis on these articles revealed that the main keyword in the kitchen discourse were 'woman, home, housework, hygiene, health, efficiency, improvement, economy, dirty, maru, maid, daily life, clean, equipment, research' and so on. The importance of the 'woman' concept was related to the modern family discourse under the nation state. Moreover, the results also showed that the 'hygiene' concept had been relatively weakened in 1930s. Instead, the importance of 'efficiency' idea was remarkable in 1930s. The 'efficiency' issue showed the influence of the idea of housework rationalization from western society, as well as Life-betterment campaign under the colonialism.
