Abstract |
Confucianism in traditional age had influenced on not only the people manners but also architectural space and building type. The Yangban`s residence house of Joseon Dynasty in Korean history was the center of the Confucian culture. Especially the rite of passage had created an important building of family shrine which is a key point of understanding the spatial layout of Yangban`s head family house. This study is on the spatial configuration and its architectural cognition of the head family houses in the area of north Gyeongsang province, Korea. For this we did field survey research on 25 head family house especially on Bulcheonwi, the progenitor ritual with interview of the succeeding grandsons of the family houses. Each head family house has its own ritual aspect of arranging the dishes of food, preparing a table of eatables for memorial service and people’s movement according to the architectural configuration and it can be understood as their own flexible adaptation to the old principle of Zhu-xi’s Family Courtesy. |
