Abstract |
The Ss. Mary & Nicholas' Seoul Anglican Cathedral was incompletely built in 1926. Later it was finally constructed, according to its original drawings, in 1996. The Cathedral was designated as Tangible Cultural Property No.35 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 1978. Since the 1980s, previous studies have largely examined the Cathedral as an exemplary indigenization of western architectural style into Korea. However, the historical grounds of indigenization were little, especially regards to its construction process. To fill the gap, this research aims to investigate its design and construction process through the historical documents from the Sungkonghoe University Library. Findings of this paper may contribute to the academia by re-examining the architectural characteristics and meanings of the Ss. Mary & Nicholas' Seoul Anglican Cathedral. |
