Abstract The purpose of this research is to propose methodologies to identify buying behavior patterns for each escalator type of department stores. Since the escalator can help consumers to move from one place to another, it will affect consumers' approaching possibilities. It will also affect the passing possibilities. This paper proposes methodologies to identify buying behaviour as well as buying behaviour forecasting for each shop in a shopping complex. As the buying behavior pattern is directly related with sales, this research also proposes methodologies to estimate expected sales of each shop in a shopping complex in accordance with escalator design. This research proposes three factors affecting buying behavior - ease of access, ease of visit, and circulation length to cover - and quantitative values representing each of these factors - integration, visit frequency, and travel distance. One equation for estimating buying behaviors was proposed in this paper. In this study, the integration, visit frequency, and travel distance are calculated for a certain area within a shopping complex for each type of escalator to identify customers' buying behavior patterns.
