Abstract This study aims to propose guidelines for housing to response climate change focusing on extreme heat and heat island effect. Recently climate change has been intensified, so cities are being threatened by a variety of climate change disasters such as draught, extreme heat, and flooding. Among them, extreme heat in summer which causes heat island effect and increased cooling load have raised economical and social cost. Therefore, it is important to improve abilities adapting to this climate change. For this propose, theoretical investigation, analytic case studies on the domestic and foreign housing and design strategies focusing on the extreme heat and heat island effect are conducted. As a conclusion, guidelines for reducing extreme heat and heat island effect are proposed, which will be used as a basis for housing design adapting to climate change.
