Abstract This paper investigates the influence of the construction of the Daebijeon in accordance to the status change of the Daebi in Joseon Dynasty. Daebi(大妃) is a former queen, as well as the mother of present king. Daebijeon(大妃殿) is the building of daebi. As the social aspects of late Joseon period focused on filial duty, Daebi received much reverence of the king. The status of Daebi influenced the space that enshrined the former queen, which results in many constructions of Daebijeon in late Joseon period. This paper studies the hidden significance that this late Joseon characteristic expresses. The Daebijeon is a space for the king to perform his filial duty, in which its user is the Daebi where the king is the principal agent for the construction. The Daebijeon acted as a means to express the king's royal authority. It is a space for court banquet for the Daebi within the palace, as well as for associated rituals. The Daebijeon is an extension of the byeoljeon, the king's non-ceremonial space, also the semi-ceremonial space in palace.
