Abstract Every city should have its own step to solve urban heat island effect in accordance with the atmosphere it has. Because urban heat island effect can be seen as the heat pollution relevant to atmosphere of the city. Thus, the analysis of factors which have influence on thermal environment of the city and the effect of those is essential. In this study, the city was classified by six zones; residential area, commercial area, manufacturing area, park, green area, Gwangju Greenway, and Gwangju River. Temperature record conducted on 55 spot during before sunrise (05:00~06:00), afternoon (14:30~15:00), and after sunset (20:30~21:00). The results are listed as follows; 1) Nearby green area; the temperature before sunrise was relatively lower than others which means, green area can be helpful to drop the temperature of the area at night. 2) green area nearby paved road or building area; the temperature after noon was higher than others which means, the temperature was influenced by the vehicle exhaust and radiant heat of the buildings. 3) park and green area; the temperature of every spot was different in accordance with the size of the green area, planting density of trees and ground condition. 4) Gwangju Greenway; the characteristic of the temperature was similar with park and green area. However, the fact that the temperature of Gwangju Greenway, which had more dense trees, was lower than park and green area in the afternoon showed that the shading of street trees had outstanding effect on lowering temperature on the street in the afternoon. 5) Gwangju River; the temperature was lower than all the other spots before sunrise and after sunset. It is assumed that the river had the most contribution to control rising temperature of the city even though it still had influenced by solar radiation, radiant heat of the buildings, vehicle exhaust, and so on. 6) Road; the temperature before sunrise was relatively higher than other spots which means heat storage on the road had influenced the rise in temperature in the night. These results showed that there is density of trees shading the ground and Gwangju River; which is the wind road of the city, at the center of the solution of the heat island effect in Gwangju.
