Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical situation and thoughts that influence its morphological expression in the idealistic architectural and urban proposals of the japanese Metabolism group. In Japan of the 1960s and 70s, the active left-wing political movement is strong, and many young architects, including Metabolism, are interested in socialist works such as socialist urban planning of early Modernism and Soviet urban planning. Therefore, this study analyzes the impact of socialist thoughts, including Marxism, on the Metabolism group by comparing with the works of antecedent socialist architects and urbanists. This study analyzes also the utopian characteristics embedded in their architectural and urban works by linking this group with the political, social and cultural context of postwar Japan. |
