Abstract |
Donghwasa temple in Mt. Palgong is a temple of the Beobsang school that was built in the middle of the 9th century during the unified
Silla Dynasty. Looking at the current building composition of Donghwasa temple, where the Daeungjeon hall area, Geumdangam area, and
Biroan area form the center of the temple area, no trace of the Beobsang school temple can be found. In this study, firstly clarified the
building composition of Donghwasa temple, which was maintained as a temple of the Beobsang school from its foundation to the Goryeo
Dynasty. Secondly, clarified the time and the reason of the change in the temple area were, centering on the Daeungjeon hall area, in
relation to the situation of Donghwasa temple after the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 in the Joseon Dynasty. Finally, it was possible to
clarify the background of the change in the building composition of the Geumdangam area, where the founding temple was located, to the
current building composition of the Amitabha faith in relation to the trends of the Buddhism in the late Joseon Dynasty. |
