Abstract The foam plastic insulation material is relatively vulnerable to fire because of characteristics of the material. It is necessary to improve the fire safety for the foam polystyrene insulation(EPS), so a prototype with the inorganic flame retardant was developed and tested. The prototype had a high level of the self-extinguishing in horizontal and vertical combustion tests, and satisfied the level of semi-incombustible according to the current regulation. The further research is required to improve the manufacturing of a foam polystyrene insulation with flame retardants and the self-extinguishing of various organic insulation materials. In addition, it is more accurate to test both horizontal and vertical combustibility as the self-combustion evaluation method for a foam plastic insulation. Under the current regulations, the panels are classified as a flame retardant material, but it is necessary to consider the minimum performance standard for the flame retardant performance of the inner material.
