Abstract |
Korean residential bathrooms were established as windowless indoor rooms, wet-spaces, and Western-style integrated types throughout 1910s
to 1970s. There have been changes in additional composition and improvements in facilities and materials, but the basic compositions has
been maintained for a long time. In order to understand such Korean residential bathrooms, a specific research on the settlement process up
to the 1970s is necessary. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand Korean residential bathrooms by analyzing the process of
changes from Japanese colonial era which was the beginning of the change, to the 1970s when the basic composition was established. The
periods are divided into Japanese colonial era(1910?45), the Housing-mix era after liberation(1945?70), and the Apartment settlement
era(1970s). The housing plan drawings from each period were collected to analyze the changes. Due to the influence of Japan, toilets were
included in the main building and were separated according to the purpose. And after liberation, separation was simplified and the space
became wet-space by showing Korean’s traditional habits. And, with the development of apartments and technical support, a basic bathroom
composition that combines Korean-style wet-spaces and Western-style integrated-room types has been established. |
