Abstract The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the AIJ 2008 design formula; currently used as the design formula for the external diaphragm and CFT column moment connection; by comparing with FEA(finite element analysis) model of external diaphragm and CFT column connection. The external diaphragm FEA model was based on DIA-75, which was a external diaphragm specimen on a previous study of Li et al.(2010). Twenty variable models were produced based on the verified FEA model, and the shear strength and nominal bending strength of the variable model were compared and analyzed with the AIJ 2008 design formula, respectively. The analysis results are as follows; the shear strength equation showed an average error rate of 5.8%, and the nominal bending strength equation showed an average error rate of 5.6%.
