Abstract |
In the early 20th century, the Hungarian artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was regarded as an avant-garde artist who sought to combine science and
art in the midst of a rapidly evolving technological civilization that crossed various artistic realms. As a Bauhaus educator, he also attempted
to incorporate his ideas into an architectural space with his signature book entitled From Materials to Architecture that showcased his clear
orientation towards architecture and space. This study examines the methodology of spatial expression in the paintings he worked on
throughout his life by period, among his other artistic activities. The analysis of his paintings up to the 1920s focused on the modernization
of Europe in the early 20th century and the changes in style under the influence of avant-garde art history; whereas the spatial
representations of his late paintings after the 1930s, lacked prior research, were analyzed through the correlation between the use of new
industrial materials and his multidisciplinary artwork activities. The significance of this research is to figure out the process of change in
formative expression intended by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's paintings that induce a spatial experience beyond the two-dimensional art work and
examine his essential ideas towards the perception of architectural space. |
