Abstract |
A heating surface of a coil is exposed to various environments contaminated by various materials such as dust, scaling, and others over time. This
phenomenon that contaminants attach and accumulate little by little on the heating surface of the coil is called fouling. Fouling involves contaminants
of the inner and outer surfaces of the coil by adhering particulates and sediments. Fouling generates a thermal resistance layer on the coil, this layer
decreases the heat exchange effectiveness of the coil. Eventually, this phenomenon leads to a reduction in performance and increases the energy usage
of the HVAC system. Therefore, this study evaluated the heat exchange effectiveness and HVAC system energy usage to analyze the effect of the
fouling on the HVAC system. To achieve this, a building energy simulation was conducted by assuming a situation in which fouling occurred. As
a results, the heat exchange effectiveness decreased over time. The inner surface fouling had a greater effect on the decrease in effectiveness and
the increase in energy usage than the outer surface fouling. |
