| Abstract |
This study explores the concept of traditionality in contemporary Chinese architecture by examining Zhang Ke's series of Beijing Siheyuan
renovation projects, including Micro Yuan’er Children’s Library & Art Center (2012~16), Micro Hutong (2013~16), Co-Living Courtyard
(2015~17), and Hutong Social Housing (2018~19). Zhang Ke has achieved international acclaim for his approach, which combines elements
of Western modernism with traditional Chinese architecture to forge a distinctive identity. In these renovation projects, he does not restore
the traditional courtyard form but instead preserves the informal living spaces of local residents, blending old and new materials and tectonics
based on current usage. The study analyzes his work through three lenses: ad hoc adoption of materials, hybridization of structural systems,
and a house within a house approach. It concludes that Zhang Ke’s interpretation of traditionality can be defined by three concepts:
re-problematization of tradition, viewing tradition as a complex way of life, and a realist perspective of now here. |
