Abstract |
This study examines the impact of a pedestrian environment improvement project on children's behavior near Gaemyeong Elementary School
in Seoul. CCTV footage of the main school road, recorded before and after the project, was analyzed to identify behavioral changes. Results
showed a 10.7% increase in essential activities, while new behaviors, such as cycling and riding kickboards, emerged. Optional activities
decreased by 16.0%, likely due to reduced reliance on the fence for walking after stairs were added to the pedestrian path. Social activities
rose by 46.6%, with a notable increase in walking and conversing on sidewalks, indicating an improved sociality index post-project.
Additionally, children’s use of space expanded from sidewalks to roads, reflecting changes in occupancy patterns. These findings highlight the
significant influence of pedestrian environment improvements on children’s walking behaviors and space utilization. The study’s value lies in
its empirical analysis, using CCTV data to capture behavioral shifts before and after the project. |
