Abstract This study aims to highlight subtle differences between the dissertation submitted by North Korean architect Kim Jung-hee to the Moscow Architectural Institute in 1953 and its Korean translation published in North Korea later that year. Both works focus on the basic principles for North Korea’s postwar urban reconstruction. Although the two publications are largely identical in content, there are a few notable differences in the images and text. Some figures present in the dissertation are missing or altered in the translation, and the text includes additions and omissions. These variations were influenced by the differing purposes of an academic dissertation and a mass-published book, as well as the political and temporal context of their creation. This paper argues that both works, written in haste, contain errors and remain incomplete in nature.
