Abstract |
The increasing trend of population decline has heightened interest in shrinking cities. However, most studies on shrinking cities focus on total
population, with limited attention to spatial aspects. This study identifies functional shrinkage areas within shrinking cities and analyzes their
spatial distribution. Using AMOEBA clustering, functional shrinkage areas were identified in Gongju-si, Namwon-si, and Cheongdo-gun. The
results indicate that approximately 60% of built-up areas are functional shrinkage zones. No significant relationship was found between the
built-up ratio and the service population in these areas. A common pattern of shrinkage was observed, beginning at the outskirts of cities,
although variations existed between cities. In Gongju, functional shrinkage was observed internally. In Namwon, areas with high shrinkage
potential were located at the center of the built-up area. In Cheongdo, shrinkage was most pronounced in outer regions. |
