Abstract |
This study critically examines the discourse on environment in Korean architectural history from 1966 to 1980, a period often referred to as
the developmental era. Focusing on the influential journal SPACE, founded in 1966 by architect Kim Swoo-geun and the Space Group, the
research highlights the evolution of the concept of environment through two main interpretations: environment as nature or ecology and
environment as the surrounding conditions of humans. An analysis of 128 selected articles from SPACE revealed a gradual shift from an
anthropocentric view to a growing emphasis on environmental preservation and ecological balance. This transition reflects a movement from
human-centered urban development to an increased awareness of environmental crises, culminating in Kim Swoo-geun’s 1980 theory of
negativism, which integrates both global and local environmental concepts. This study not only reframes historical architectural discourse but
also enriches contemporary environmental architectural theory by tracing its development within the context of Korea’s modern architectural
history. |
