Abstract |
South Korea is facing rapid aging due to advancements in medical technology and declining birth rates. To address this issue, the
government has implemented policies such as the "2030 Aging Society Policy Roadmap" and the "Age-Friendly Cities Initiative" to improve
the quality of life for older adults and promote active aging and aging in place. According to the 2020 National Survey on Older Persons,
83.8% of individuals aged 65 and older expressed a preference to "remain in their current residence if their health allows," and 56.6% shared
the same preference even if their health deteriorates. This reflects a strong desire among older adults to age in a familiar environment. To
realize this, the focus must shift from developing new housing to improving existing living environments for older residents. Particularly,
community-level methodologies should be explored to provide housing support tailored to local characteristics and physical environments.
Although research on age-friendly environments is increasing, studies addressing the specific needs of older adults living in Naturally
Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) in South Korea remain insufficient. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of residents in
potential NORC areas within urban settings and provide evidence for developing age-friendly living environments at the community level. The
study surveys residents aged 65 and older in four aging neighborhoods in Seoul, analyzing factors that determine aging in place. Based on
the findings, it seeks to propose policy directions for the NORC system in South Korea. |
