Abstract |
This study presents a shape design optimization procedure for grid shells. It includes grid pattern generation, finite element mesh generation for single-layer and double-layer grid shells, finite element analysis as well as definitions and implementations of structural optimization. The geometric model of the grid shells is defined using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-spline), followed by finite element mesh generation on the defined surface. For double-layer grid shells, diagonal members are generated between the top and bottom surfaces to complete a whole structure. The entire optimization process leverages generic components of Grasshopper and relevant plug-ins. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed procedure effectively controls the shape of a grid shell, making it applicable to practical structures. |
