Abstract |
This study examines the evolving definition of museums both domestically and internationally, the operational and facility planning of the
National Museum of Korea, and the resulting changes in functional spaces. The aim is to identify spatial changes that have occurred
alongside the shifting and expanding roles of museums. The research analyzes the ICOM’s Museum Definition and the changes in domestic
museum laws over time. Additionally, operational and facility planning literature from the National Museum of Korea reviewed to identify
plans responding to these changes. Lastly, projects that led to spatial transformations at the National Museum of Korea were gathered through
web crawling of Korea’s national e-procurement system, and the spatial changes were categorized and analyzed by their functions and
characteristics. The findings show that in response to changes in the role of museums, the National Museum of Korea underwent shifts in
2005 and 2019, marked by key themes: equal cultural education opportunities, traditional methods of experience and visitor engagement, and
digital methods of experience and visitor engagement. Future changes are expected to emphasize the value of leisure spaces, with facilities
and functions that are closely connected to the local community. |
