Abstract |
This study conducts a typological analysis of Innovation Cities located in small urban areas, focusing on the spatial and functional
relationships between these cities and their surrounding regions. Existing classifications of Innovation Cities have largely been based on
development form or location, offering limited insight into their effects on regional living spheres. To address this gap, the study examines
commuting flows and everyday consumption activities to empirically identify how actual living spheres are formed. Through a comparative
case study of the Jeonnam and Gyeongbuk Innovation Cities, the research finds that Jeonnam demonstrates a “linkage-oriented” structure
through strong integration with nearby urban centers, while Gyeongbuk forms a “dispersed” pattern with flexible connections to multiple
neighboring cities. Based on these findings and a review of previous studies, Innovation Cities are reclassified into five types:
expansion-oriented, linkage-oriented, dispersed, central, and complementary. This new typology, grounded in real-world activity patterns, moves
beyond traditional development- or location-based approaches. The results provide valuable insights for policy frameworks aimed at enhancing
residential environments and fostering balanced development in small urban regions. |
