Abstract |
Since the 1970s, the weakening of settlement foundations in South Korea has contributed to a decline in community cohesion. In response,
efforts have been made to systematically include community facilities in new town developments. Sejong City introduced the Complex
Community model as a strategic approach to rebuilding residential communities. Although the model integrates both architectural and urban
spatial elements, its definition and scope remain unclear. This study aims to clarify the concept of Complex Communities by identifying their
key architectural features and spatial components. By analyzing development cases, the study categorizes and examines their spatial layouts
and design principles. Typically, Complex Communities are organized around pedestrian-friendly networks, with essential facilities placed for
convenient access. However, differences are observed in green space design and integration with public transportation. The findings offer
valuable guidance for planning and designing future residential communities. They serve as a reference for urban planners and policymakers
seeking to improve community cohesion and enhance living environments. By examining spatial organization and community typologies, the
study supports strategies for creating sustainable, community-focused urban areas in South Korea’s changing urban landscape. |
