Abstract |
With the emergence of contemporary hanok with the revival of hanok in the early 2000s, the number of ‘multi-layered hanok’ is also
steadily increasing. And at the center of it is ‘Architect Hwang Doo-jin’. He has been continuously conducting several experimental attempts
on multi-layered hanok for about 20 years under his architectural theme, which he named ‘vertical expansion’ of hanok. By examining these
vertical expansion experiments of him, this study aims to analyze how contemporary hanok is being multi-layered and why the number of
multi-layered contemporary hanok, including the second floor, is increasing, and go one step further to discuss the possibility of multi-layered
of contemporary hanok. This paper examines Hwang Doo-jin's concept of vertical expansion and focuses on the four cases of ‘Mumuheon’,
‘Donginjae’, ‘L Residence’, and ‘Mokgyeongheon’ to which it was applied. As a result, we could understand the way of contemporary hanok
became multi-layered and apprehend the possibility of multilayerization. |
