Abstract |
Urban design is a major subject in architectural education and one of the core competencies required by the Korea Architectural Accrediting
Board in South Korea. However, due to its inherently multidisciplinary nature, there is no clear consensus on the scope of urban design
education in both academia and practice. This study aims to systematically analyze the content of urban design courses within the framework
of architectural education to define their scope and current status. To achieve this, an archival research on all of the accredited architectural
education programs was conducted, identifying urban design-related courses. Course syllabi were collected, and their positions within the
curricular structure were examined. As of early January 2023, a total of 198 urban design-related courses were identified across 67
undergraduate-level accredited architectural programs. The collected data were organized through content analysis. On average, each program
offered approximately three urban design-related courses, covering common themes such as architecture, urban design and planning, urban
regeneration, environment, and sustainability. While regional differences in overarching course themes were minimal, variations existed in
specific topics. Overall, the courses focused more on design and planning rather than policy. Additionally, about 63% of the courses were
linked to adjacent disciplines, highlighting the inherently multidisciplinary nature of urban design education. |
