Abstract |
This study explores the lesser-known late works of architect Kim Chung-up at Jeju National University, focusing on the Main Building of the Department of Fisheries and the Lecture Hall of the Department of Education. Although these projects were only partially realized and have not been well preserved, they offer meaningful insight into Kim’s architectural ideas during the late 1960s. Based on newly uncovered archival sources and a comparison with his earlier works, three key architectural characteristics are identified. These later buildings show continuity with Kim’s previous designs at Jeju National University, though their full execution was limited by institutional changes and financial challenges. Both structures were planned to support multiple functions within a single building, using phased horizontal expansion organized around central courtyards. These courtyards enhanced circulation, spatial layering, and adaptation to the environment. Compared to earlier open and dispersed forms, the later designs adopt a more compact and internally unified layout, made possible by the use of reinforced concrete. This shift reflects an evolution in Kim’s design approach. The analysis offers a deeper understanding of how Kim Chung-up’s architectural strategies changed in response to regional identity and typological experimentation during the 1960s. |
