Abstract This study aims to provide foundational data for the effective development of public leisure spaces by analyzing residents' most satisfying leisure activities and their space-related needs. A survey of 623 residents from three low-rise residential areas in Seoul examined variations based on location, socio-demographic factors, and household composition. The results showed that the most satisfying leisure activities did not always align with the types of leisure spaces residents felt were needed, indicating that enjoyment of an activity does not necessarily translate into demand for corresponding facilities. While no major differences were found between residential areas, notable variations appeared by gender, age, occupation, and whether residents lived with minor children. Elderly participants reported high satisfaction with sports and educational activities, but expressed greater need for cultural spaces. Households with minor children tended to prefer rest-oriented activities but also placed high importance on access to cultural spaces. These findings suggest that leisure space usage and preferences vary depending on resident characteristics. The study recommends that future public leisure space development go beyond expanding facilities and instead adopt customized planning tailored to the specific needs of different user groups. As a practical approach, residents of low-rise areas can be categorized into three main groups: elderly residents, households with minor children, and general residents, with each group’s preferences guiding design and planning decisions.
