Abstract |
This study investigates how shared e-scooter usage varies across urban areas by analyzing trip patterns in three Korean cities with distinct spatial contexts: Seoul (metropolitan core), Ansan (suburban new town), and Andong (provincial downtown). Using 37,783 GPS-based trip records combinded with the nearest daily place GIS data for each trip’s origin and destination, this study identifies key destination facilities, origin?destination (OD) connections, and associated travel distances and durations across the three cities. Results show that while e-scooters are generally used within 1 km and 5 minutes, travel distances and durations differ notably: longest in Ansan, followed by Andong, and shortest in Seoul. Residential and retail/food-related facilities were the most frequently accessed destinations across all cities, whereas access to public transportation, business, and educational facilities showed considerable variation. Furthermore, connectivity patterns between daily places differed markedly, shaping flexible daily place networks aligned with each city’s unique context and spatial structure. These findings highlight the need for context-sensitive planning strategies that reflect the spatial characteristics of each city, rather than applying a uniform X-minute model, to better integrate shared e-scooters into daily urban mobility. |
