Abstract Preservation of cultural heritage requires data-based evidence to support accurate and systematic restoration, emphasizing the growing importance of objective analysis. Seokguram Grotto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its historical and artistic value, has undergone several restoration efforts that have significantly altered its original indoor environment. While various studies have been conducted on the restoration, the lighting environment has received relatively limited attention from a methodological perspective. The aim of this study is to contribute to the preservation and continued transmission of cultural heritage by analyzing the original lighting conditions of Seokguram Grotto through a quantitative approach. A simulation model was developed using prior research on Seokguram Grotto’s spatial layout and lighting features in its original form. Four evaluation criteria were applied to assess the indoor lighting environment. The results provide measurable insights into the Grotto’s historical lighting conditions and offer a useful reference for future heritage restoration and conservation planning.
