| Abstract |
Recent shifts toward learner-centered education have led universities to create informal learning spaces (ILS) that foster student engagement
and collaboration. This study investigates how different types of ILS in a university library influence users’ perceptions of physical and social
environment, and how these perceptions shape place attachment. A conceptual framework was developed through a literature review,
identifying key physical and social characteristics of ILS and dimensions of place attachment. An empirical survey of library users was
conducted, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. The results reveal three key insights. First, flexible
furniture and equipment that accommodate diverse learning patterns have the strongest impact on users’ evaluations of the physical
environment. Second, learning spaces that balance opportunities for focused study with options for social interaction are essential to users’
sense of productivity. Third, the degree of place attachment varies according to learning modes and the functions offered by the ILS,
reflecting individual learning goals and preferences. Regression analysis further indicates that accessibility, perceived productivity, and
emotional connection each exerts a significant positive influence on place attachment. Overall, the formation of place attachment in informal
learning environments results from the combined effects of physical and social factors, underscoring the importance of holistic design
strategies for future university learning spaces. |
