| Abstract |
This study defines constructive transformation as the adjustment of construction methods to maintain a consistent formal expression in the
architecture of Mario Botta and, from this standpoint, examines his works in Korea. This approach addresses the limitations of prevailing
discourses, particularly Critical Regionalism, which have not adequately explained Botta’s later practice as his projects expanded in scale and
geography. Methodologically, the study combines a comprehensive survey of Botta’s works in Korea with an in-depth interview with his
partner architect, Han Man-Won, to establish empirical grounding. Through close analysis of design and construction processes, along with
detailed drawings, the research reveals how Botta adapted construction methods to Korean technical and economic conditions while preserving
his formal principles. In doing so, he sustained a coherent architectural language across diverse contexts. The study thus introduces a new
framework for understanding Botta’s later works, an analytical perspective of constructive transformation for formal expression, that
complements existing discourse. |
